National Assembly Calls for Justice in Prakriti Lamsal’s Death

Kathmandu, Nepal – National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the tragic and mysterious death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student from Butwal studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha, India. Speaking during today’s National Assembly meeting, Chairperson Dahal emphasized the need for diplomatic intervention to ensure justice for Lamsal and to safeguard the rights and safety of other Nepali students at KIIT.

The case has sparked outrage among lawmakers, with many demanding accountability from KIIT authorities and urging the Nepali government to take swift action. Lawmakers revealed that Lamsal had allegedly faced mental torture and harassment, with her complaints ignored by the university administration. Radhe Shyam Paswan, a member of the National Assembly, claimed that Lamsal was "compelled to commit suicide" due to the administration's negligence, calling for a transparent investigation and the rescue of stranded Nepali students.

Krishna Bahadur Rokaya and Madan Kumari Shah echoed these concerns, condemning the mistreatment of Nepali students and the university's refusal to allow Lamsal’s family to see her body. Lawmakers Mohammad Khalid, Tula Prasad Bishwakarma, and Tulasa Kumari Dahal also demanded justice, urging the government to ensure a fair probe and hold the guilty parties accountable.

Lawmakers Condemn Mistreatment of Civil Servants, Call for Accountability

In a separate development, National Assembly members expressed grave concerns over the increasing incidents of physical assault and mistreatment of civil servants by local-level representatives. During the Zero Hour of the session, lawmakers highlighted the insecurity faced by public employees and called for immediate action to address the issue.

MP Padam Bahadur Pariyar condemned a recent attack on municipal staff in Bandipur Municipality-6, Tanahu district, demanding an investigation and accountability. Similarly, MP Manarupa Sharma denounced such acts of violence, urging the government to take strict action against perpetrators.

MP Renu Chand emphasized the need to end all forms of discrimination, while Bishnudevi Pudasaini stressed the importance of inter-agency coordination in infrastructure development, including sewage, drinking water, and electricity projects in Kathmandu.

Government Urged to Prioritize Student Safety and Civil Servant Protection

The National Assembly session concluded with a unified call for the government to prioritize the safety and rights of Nepali students abroad, particularly in the wake of Prakriti Lamsal’s death. Lawmakers also urged immediate measures to protect civil servants from abuse and ensure a secure working environment.

As the Nepali government faces mounting pressure to address these critical issues, the National Assembly’s demands underscore the need for swift diplomatic and administrative action to deliver justice and safeguard the rights of its citizens both at home and abroad.
