Nepal Sees Surge in Road Deaths, Suicides & Cybercrime Cases

In the first six months of the current fiscal year, Nepal has witnessed a concerning rise in road accident fatalities, with 1,233 lives lost in 11,338 accidents. This marks an increase in deaths compared to the same period last year, which recorded 1,149 deaths from 12,856 accidents. The Ministry of Home Affairs attributes this rise in casualties to careless driving and a lack of adherence to traffic rules.
While the overall number of road accidents has decreased in certain regions such as Gandaki, Kathmandu Valley, and Karnali, the death toll has unfortunately surged, especially in the Madhes Province and Bagmati (Kathmandu Valley). The Ministry noted that despite a drop in accidents in some areas, fatalities have increased, pointing to the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and safer driving practices.
Additionally, the Ministry reported a high incidence of suicides, with 3,134 cases recorded in the past six months. This marks a slight decrease from last year's total of 3,457 suicides during the same period. The highest number of suicides occurred between October 17 and November 15, with 628 cases.
Cybercrime continues to be a growing issue, with 10,776 complaints filed in the first half of the fiscal year. Telegram emerged as the most frequently used platform for cybercriminals, with 1,187 related complaints. Facebook followed closely with 1,098 complaints, while Instagram and TikTok also saw a notable number of cybercrime reports.
In the previous fiscal year, 19,730 cybercrime complaints were registered, showing an alarming rise compared to 9,013 complaints in the fiscal year 2022/23.
The rise in road accident fatalities, suicides, and cybercrime highlights the pressing need for stronger preventive measures, more effective law enforcement, and increased public awareness to address these growing issues.
