Panel Discussion Highlights Role of Radio in Weather Forecasting and Climate Information

Speakers at a program marking World Radio Day 2025 today emphasized the importance of ensuring that information shared by mass media is centered on improving the lives of citizens. The event, organized by the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (ACORAB), included a panel discussion on "Multi-Stakeholder Participation for Ensuring Access to Responsible Meteorological and Climate Information."

Kusum Devi Thapa, President of the Federal Parliament's Committee on Agriculture, Cooperatives, and Natural Resources, highlighted the importance of weather forecasting in Nepal, where 62 percent of the population relies on agriculture, which is highly vulnerable to climate and weather-related disasters. She stressed the need for Nepal to focus on utilizing climate funds and managing meteorological forecasting policies effectively. "Radio plays a crucial role in disseminating weather-related information and warnings," Thapa stated.

Om Prakash Bhattarai, Head of the Climate Finance Department at the Ministry of Finance, addressed the ongoing global debate on prioritizing between climate change and economic growth. He noted that Nepal would require $276 billion to achieve its target of zero carbon emissions by 2045. Bhattarai emphasized that climate change-related information systems are vital, as it is the government's responsibility to protect citizens from climate hazards.

Kamal Raj Joshi, Director General of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, highlighted advancements in meteorological forecasting, stating that technology has made forecasting more accurate than ever. "We have made significant strides in disaster forecasting to mitigate damage. Radio plays a critical role in disseminating weather alerts, and it is essential to invest in a robust meteorological forecasting system to prevent loss of life and property," he said. Joshi also pointed out that the Nepal Electricity Authority relies on weather forecasts from the department to manage power imports and exports, estimating river water availability for up to 15 days.

Arati Chatuat, Deputy General Manager of Public Service Broadcasting (PSB), emphasized the importance of disseminating hydrological and meteorological information through media, particularly in relation to agriculture. She urged media platforms, including radio, to prioritize the distribution of credible and authentic content that positively impacts civic life. Chatuat also suggested exploring alternative methods of broadcasting to build public trust in media content.
