Kathmandu, Jan 28: Chandragiri Municipality in Kathmandu has introduced an online recommendation system for citizenship certificates, making it the first initiative of its kind in the Kathmandu Valley.

The service, launched in Ward 12 of Balambu, aims to streamline the process of issuing citizenship recommendations. To prepare for this, the municipality provided training to all secretaries from its 15 wards and executive members in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the District Administration Office, Kathmandu.

The service was officially inaugurated on Monday by Mayor Ghanshyam Giri and Chief Administrative Officer Hem Raj Aryal. During the launch, they processed online recommendations for two Balambu residents, Anuj Maharjan and Tisha Shrestha, using the newly developed software.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, over 2,000 wards across 28 districts had adopted online recommendations for citizenship certificates by mid-January. This initiative was first piloted in Gaindakot, Nawalparasi, last year.

The digital system has improved record-keeping, expedited service delivery, and significantly reduced errors in documentation.

Chandragiri Municipality plans to roll out the online recommendation service across all its wards within this week. In addition to this, the municipality already offers digital services for house map certifications, revenue collection, and vital registrations.

Mayor Giri further revealed plans to implement a digital signature system soon, aligning with the government’s policy of promoting tech-friendly governance.

Mukti Ram Rijal, Assistant Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, praised Chandragiri Municipality for pioneering this service and expressed hope that all local levels in the Kathmandu Valley would adopt similar tech-driven public services in the near future.
