NPL 2024: A Potential Game Changer for Nepali Cricket
Kathmandu, Nov 30: The inaugural edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), a franchise-based T20 cricket tournament, kicks off today in the capital. Organized by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the league has generated significant excitement, featuring prominent international cricketers alongside Nepal's best talents.
The tournament comprises eight franchise teams representing Nepal's seven provinces and the federal capital. Competing for the coveted trophy, which includes a stone from Kalapatthar engraved with Mount Everest, the teams aim to make history in this first edition.
Adding a global touch, matches will be broadcast live on Star Sports Channel, with renowned international commentators. The Tribhuvan University International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur has undergone upgrades, including a digital scoreboard and enhanced seating arrangements, drawing fans like Imadol resident Raman Thapa, who has already secured tickets to witness the action live.
Star players such as Shikhar Dhawan (India), Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham (New Zealand), Joshua Trump (USA), Lahiru Milantha (Sri Lanka), Mohammad Mohsin Khan (Pakistan), and Ben Mike (England) are among the international attractions of the NPL.
For Nepali cricketers, the opportunity to play alongside such seasoned international players brings invaluable experience, potentially accelerating cricket's development in the country. If managed professionally and commercially, the NPL could transform Nepali cricket, encouraging government investment in infrastructure and grassroots development while establishing a sustainable cricketing ecosystem.
Investors have shown confidence in the tournament, with franchise ownership costing up to NPR 40 million. The Pokhara Avengers, for instance, were purchased for NPR 35.7 million. While CAN has yet to announce the prize money, the best Nepali cricketer will receive a car as recognition for their performance.
The tournament opener will see Janakpur Bolts, representing Madhesh Province, face Biratnagar Kings from Koshi Province at 12:15 PM at the TU International Cricket Ground.
