Bangladesh Power Export: A Historic Achievement for Nepal
Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, has hailed Nepal's first-ever electricity export to Bangladesh as a historic milestone. Speaking at the inaugural event marking the beginning of power export from Nepal to Bangladesh, he stated, “This is a historic day for a sustainable energy future in South Asia.”
Minister Khadka emphasized that the tripartite power sale agreement signed on October 3 between Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh Power Development Board, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited of India was crucial in paving the way for this achievement.
He extended his gratitude to the governments of India and Bangladesh for their facilitation in importing power from Nepal. He noted that this export promotes energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability, strengthening economic ties and fostering unity between Nepal and Bangladesh.
Following the October 3 agreement, India’s Central Electricity Authority granted permission for the transmission of Nepalese power to Bangladesh via Indian transmission lines. With this, 40 megawatts of power export to Bangladesh commenced today. Minister Khadka, Indian Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and Bangladesh’s Energy Ministry Advisor Mohammad Fazlul Kabir Khan inaugurated the power export virtually.
During the event, Indian Power Minister Khattar praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step in South Asia’s cross-border electricity connectivity. He also reiterated India’s commitment to investing in Nepal's hydropower projects, expressing hope that the completion of these projects will further ease energy transmission.
Minister Khattar stated that such agreements play an essential role in sustainable development and in expanding green energy.
Bangladesh’s Energy Ministry Advisor, Khan, acknowledged the substantial contribution of such agreements in enhancing regional energy coordination. He noted that Nepal’s hydropower could assist Bangladesh’s goal of reaching zero carbon emissions, supporting its transition towards renewable energy and contributing to South Asia’s unified energy development.
Secretary of the Energy Ministry, Suresh Acharya, remarked that the tripartite energy agreement and export would hold a memorable place in South Asian history.
Under the agreement, Nepal will export 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh annually from June 15 to November 15, transmitting power through the 400 kV line from Dhalkebar in Nepal to Muzaffarpur-Berhampur in India and reaching Bheramara in Bangladesh. However, for this year, the exports will take place for only one day.
The event saw the presence of key officials including State Minister for Energy Purna Bahadur Tamang, Senior Energy Expert Prabal Adhikari, Foreign Ministry Joint Secretary Bhrigu Dhungana, Energy Ministry Joint Secretaries Chiranjibi Chataut and Jeevach Mandal, and NEA Executive Director Kul Man Ghising.
