Indian and Pakistani Forces Exchange Fire in Kashmir Amid Escalating Tensions

Indian and Pakistani soldiers exchanged gunfire along the disputed Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir for the fourth consecutive night, the Indian Army said on Monday, as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors continue to escalate.

According to the Indian Army, "During the night of April 27-28, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire across the Line of Control. Indian troops responded swiftly and effectively."
There were no reports of casualties from the exchange. Islamabad has yet to confirm the latest incident.

The renewed violence comes in the wake of a deadly attack on April 22, when gunmen killed 26 civilians in the Muslim-majority region — the deadliest assault on civilians in Kashmir in the past 25 years. India has accused Pakistan of supporting "cross-border terrorism" linked to the attack, a charge that Islamabad has strongly denied, calling the allegations "frivolous" and warning of a firm response to any Indian action.

In the aftermath of the attack, New Delhi swiftly downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad, revoked visas for Pakistani citizens, suspended a key water-sharing treaty, and shut down the main land border crossing. In retaliation, Pakistan expelled Indian diplomats and military advisers, cancelled visas for Indian nationals, and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft.

As tensions flare, the United Nations has called on both sides to exercise "maximum restraint" and resolve their differences "peacefully through meaningful mutual engagement."
