Trump Threatens to Abandon Ukraine Peace Talks Without Swift Progress

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday warned that the United States could withdraw from ongoing negotiations to end the war in Ukraine within days unless there is rapid progress from both Moscow and Kyiv.

The sharp warning marks a notable shift in Washington’s messaging, following Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s remarks in Paris earlier in the day. Rubio stated that the U.S. would “move on” if a peace agreement proved unattainable.

Trump, who has been pushing for a ceasefire, has so far failed to secure significant concessions from the Kremlin. Despite a breakthrough phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and multiple rounds of talks, negotiations remain stalled.

“Yeah, very shortly,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked if he planned to abandon the talks. “No specific number of days, but quickly. We want to get it done.”

While Trump refrained from assigning direct blame to either side, he underscored the urgency of progress.

“If one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say: ‘You're foolish. You're fools. You're horrible people.’ And we're going to walk away,” he said. “But hopefully, we won’t have to do that.”

Continued Strikes Amid Stalled Talks
Even as diplomatic efforts continued, Russian forces carried out fresh strikes on northeastern Ukraine, killing at least two people and injuring dozens in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, according to Ukrainian officials.

A Kremlin-imposed pause on attacks targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which had been one of the few agreements reached with Washington, officially expired on Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed.

Following his meetings with European leaders in Paris, Rubio emphasized the need for clarity.

“We need to determine whether a ceasefire is realistically achievable in the short term,” he told reporters. “If not, we’ll have to move on.”

Despite the setbacks, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, speaking from Italy, expressed continued optimism about ending the three-year conflict.

Friction with Kyiv and Europe
Trump, who pledged to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, has little to show for his efforts thus far. His outreach to Moscow has alarmed Ukraine and created tensions with European allies.

In February, Trump and Vance reportedly had a heated Oval Office exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom Trump has blamed for escalating the conflict — a stark contrast to the approach taken by former President Joe Biden.

Dismissing concerns that he is being manipulated by Moscow, Trump said, “My whole life has been one big negotiation. I know when people are playing us, and I know when they’re not.”

Meanwhile, Zelensky condemned the latest wave of Russian attacks, which occurred just days before Easter.

“This is how Russia began Good Friday — with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and Shahed drones,” Zelensky said on Telegram. “A mockery of our people and cities.”

Kyiv also reported the return of 909 fallen Ukrainian soldiers' remains from Russia.

Russia, for its part, claimed to have struck “key drone production facilities” and Ukrainian military airfields in its latest offensive.

Last month, Putin rejected a joint U.S.-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional ceasefire. The Kremlin has insisted that any truce in the Black Sea region be tied to the lifting of specific Western sanctions.

Strategic Interests and Divisions
In a separate development, Ukraine is expected to sign an agreement in Washington next week granting the U.S. broad access to its mineral resources.

European countries, seeking greater involvement in the peace process, have grown uneasy with some elements of Trump’s diplomacy. France hosted high-level discussions Thursday that included President Emmanuel Macron, Secretary Rubio, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.

Concerns have been raised over Witkoff’s alignment with Russian narratives following his recent meeting with Putin in Moscow.
