Pakistan Promotes Blue Carbon Ecosystems to Boost Maritime Sector and Climate Resilience

Islamabad, April 15: The Pakistani government has announced new initiatives to promote blue carbon ecosystems as part of its efforts to strengthen the country's maritime sector and enhance climate resilience.

“Blue carbon ecosystems are nature’s frontline climate defenders. They capture carbon, protect coastlines, sustain marine biodiversity, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities,” said Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry while addressing an event on Sunday.

Emphasizing the urgency of ecological preservation, Chaudhry highlighted the importance of conserving and restoring vital marine habitats such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. He said these efforts are central to Pakistan’s broader climate strategy and its vision for maritime sustainability.

The minister also pointed to major challenges threatening coastal and marine ecosystems, including unregulated coastal development, pollution, overfishing, climate change, and unsustainable land use practices.

“These pressures degrade critical habitats, reduce their ability to store carbon, and endanger marine life,” he warned, calling for integrated and immediate policy action to reverse ecological decline and restore balance.

Chaudhry further stressed the role of community engagement in ensuring both environmental and economic benefits. He noted that government agencies are actively working with local residents and fisherfolk to align conservation with sustainable development.
