France Welcomes US-Iran Talks but Vows Vigilance Over Security Concerns

Luxembourg, April 14 – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Monday welcomed the resumption of indirect talks between the United States and Iran, while emphasizing that Europe would remain "vigilant" to ensure its security interests are upheld.
The diplomatic dialogue, mediated by Oman and held in Muscat on Saturday, marked the highest-level engagement between the two nations since the collapse of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff participated in the initial round of talks, agreeing to reconvene within a week.
“We welcome this development,” Barrot said during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. “But together with our British and German partners, we will remain vigilant to ensure that any negotiations reflect and protect our collective security concerns.”
Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed on Sunday that the discussions with the United States will continue in an indirect format and focus exclusively on the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions, reiterating that Omani mediation will remain central to the process.
