Japan 'Strongly' Urges U.S. to Reconsider Tariffs Despite Welcoming Pause

Japan on Thursday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily pause new tariffs, but reiterated its strong demand for a comprehensive review of other existing trade levies.
“We received the latest U.S. announcement positively,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said during a regular press briefing in Tokyo. “However, we continue to strongly demand that the United States reviews measures on its reciprocal tariffs, tariffs on steel and aluminum, and tariffs on vehicles and auto parts.”
Last week, Trump announced a series of sweeping reciprocal tariffs targeting multiple countries, including a 24 percent levy on Japanese imports — a significant move affecting the world’s fourth-largest economy.
While Trump said on Wednesday that these new tariffs would be delayed for 90 days, several key duties remain in place. These include a 25 percent tariff on automobiles exported to the United States, a core concern for Japan, whose auto industry is a cornerstone of its economy.
The automotive sector employs approximately 5.6 million people in Japan, directly and indirectly, and plays a vital role in the country’s exports and industrial base.
In addition to domestic production, many Japanese companies operate key manufacturing facilities in other countries such as Vietnam — which is also facing heightened U.S. tariffs — raising further concerns about the broader impact of Washington’s trade measures.
