Four miners lost their lives, and two others remain missing following a tragic accident at a coal mine in Spain’s northern Asturias region on Monday, officials confirmed.

According to a statement from the central government’s office in Asturias, three additional workers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital. Two suffered severe burns, while the third sustained a head injury.

Local emergency services reported that they were alerted to the incident at approximately 9:30 a.m. (0730 GMT). Initial reports indicated a "problem with a machine," though further details have yet to be disclosed.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. In a message on X, he also praised emergency teams working tirelessly on the rescue operation.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident as rescue efforts continue.
