Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended an invitation to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the G7 summit scheduled for June in Alberta, according to a government official speaking to AFP on Monday.

Carney, who assumed office last week, spoke with President Zelensky over the weekend. “President Zelensky has been invited to the G7 meeting in Alberta in June,” the official confirmed.

The invitation comes amid growing uncertainty within the Group of Seven (G7) regarding a unified stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly following the return of U.S. President Donald Trump to office.

Ahead of last week's G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Quebec, the Trump administration notably avoided language explicitly supporting Ukraine's "territorial integrity" and references to Russian "aggression." However, the final communiqué issued on Friday reinstated such terminology—potentially signaling Washington's frustration over Moscow’s lack of response to a U.S.-led ceasefire proposal.

During a call with Zelensky, Carney received updates on Ukraine’s defense situation and international peace efforts. Sharing details of the conversation on social media, Carney reiterated Canada’s stance: “Canada strongly supports Ukraine’s fight for freedom against Russian aggression.”

President Zelensky described the discussion as "good and substantive" in his own social media post. He expressed gratitude to Canada for its continued support, including defense aid and assistance in Ukraine's energy sector, and commended Carney’s firm position on the need to increase pressure on Moscow.

As the current holder of the G7 presidency, Canada will host the summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.

Meanwhile, President Trump is expected to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to discuss his proposed ceasefire plan for Ukraine.
