Germany Generates Nearly 60% of Electricity from Renewables in 2024: Report

Germany’s renewable energy sector reached a new milestone in 2024, with wind, solar, biogas, and hydropower contributing 59.4% of the country's total electricity production, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Wednesday.
Renewable electricity generation hit a record-high 256.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), marking a 2.3% year-on-year increase. Despite a slight decline in output, wind power remained Germany’s largest electricity source, generating 136 billion kWh—1.4% lower than in 2023. However, its share of total electricity production increased from 30.8% in 2023 to 31.5% in 2024.
Solar energy saw the most significant growth, with photovoltaic electricity generation surging by 10.4% to 59.5 billion kWh. This pushed solar power’s share of Germany’s total electricity supply to a record 13.8%, the highest level since data collection began in 2018.
Overall, Germany generated 431.5 billion kWh of electricity in 2024, a 3.6% decline from the previous year. Destatis attributed this drop to reduced industrial electricity demand due to lower production levels and an increase in electricity imports from abroad.
