Pakistan Sets March 31 Deadline for Afghan Nationals to Leave

Islamabad – The Pakistan government has officially ordered Afghan nationals living in the country to leave by March 31, warning that deportations will commence from April 1, ARY News reported.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior has specifically directed holders of Afghan Citizen Cards (ACC) to voluntarily exit the country before the deadline, stating that those who fail to do so will be forcibly deported. This marks the first formal confirmation of the policy by the Interior Ministry, following earlier reports of planned evictions.

The ministry stated that the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Program (IFRP) has been in effect since November 1, 2023. "In continuation of the government's decision to repatriate all illegal foreigners, national leadership has now decided to also repatriate ACC holders," the statement read.

Officials assured that deportation measures will be conducted with care, ensuring no maltreatment. "Arrangements for food and healthcare for returning foreigners have also been put in place," the ministry added, emphasizing that Pakistan had provided ample time for Afghan nationals to make arrangements for their departure.

However, human rights groups and refugee advocacy organizations have condemned the move, warning that forced expulsions violate international law and Pakistan's humanitarian obligations. In an open letter, activists highlighted the plight of Afghan refugees, including human rights defenders, women, and children, many of whom fled persecution and violence in their homeland.

Critics argue that the policy unfairly targets vulnerable Afghan migrants, including those with valid visas, and imposes high visa renewal fees. Pakistan, meanwhile, maintains that the prolonged stay of Afghan refugees has become a strain on resources and a potential security risk, particularly following the Taliban's resurgence.

As deportations loom, concerns over human rights, regional stability, and Pakistan’s obligations toward its Afghan neighbors continue to spark debate.
