Bangladesh in Talks with Elon Musk for Starlink Expansion

Bangladesh announced on Friday that it is in discussions with tech billionaire Elon Musk to introduce Starlink, his satellite-based internet service, to the country. The move comes as the nation's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, seeks U.S. diplomatic backing.

During a lengthy video call on Thursday, Yunus and Musk explored the potential of Starlink in Bangladesh, emphasizing its ability to connect remote areas and create opportunities for youth, rural women, and marginalized communities. A statement from Yunus' media office confirmed that Musk expressed enthusiasm about visiting Bangladesh after receiving an invitation.

Musk, who plays a prominent role in the White House as a close associate of President Donald Trump, has not publicly commented on the meeting, including on X, the social media platform he owns.

The discussion coincided with Musk’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington. Relations between Bangladesh and India have soured since Yunus assumed office following last year’s student-led uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Once India’s key ally, Hasina remains in exile in New Delhi despite Dhaka’s calls for her extradition over alleged human rights violations during the protests.
