BJP Returns to Power in Delhi After 27 Years, AAP Ousted; Congress Fails to Score Again

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a major defeat, with several top leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, losing in their traditional strongholds.

This landmark win follows BJP’s recent electoral successes, including victories in Maharashtra and Haryana, further solidifying its dominance in national politics.

Despite hopes for a revival, the Congress once again failed to secure a single seat. The party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years from 1998, registered its third consecutive zero tally in the assembly polls.

BJP won 45 out of the 70 seats and was leading on three more. AAP secured 21 seats and was leading in one.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the win, attributing it to the party’s governance model. "Development wins, good governance triumphs. I bow to my dear sisters and brothers of Delhi for this resounding and historic mandate," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He pledged to "leave no stone unturned" in transforming Delhi.

Modi also praised BJP workers for their dedication, promising more vigorous efforts to serve the people of Delhi.

AAP Leaders Face Major Defeats
Several key AAP leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and former ministers Saurabh Bhardwaj, Somnath Bharti, and Satyendra Jain, lost their constituencies. However, Chief Minister Atishi retained her seat in Kalkaji.

In a video message, Kejriwal accepted the people's mandate and congratulated BJP on its victory. "We humbly accept the results. I hope BJP will fulfill the promises made to the people," he said. Kejriwal reaffirmed AAP's commitment to serving the people despite the setback.

Atishi, who defeated BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes, expressed gratitude to her supporters, vowing to continue her fight against BJP’s dominance. Sisodia lost narrowly to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by just 675 votes.

Key BJP Wins
Prominent BJP victors included Parvesh Verma, who defeated Kejriwal in New Delhi by over 4,000 votes, and Kapil Mishra, who won Karawal Nagar. Kailash Gahlot, a former AAP leader who switched to BJP, secured victory in Bijwasan.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah credited the win to "Modi's guarantee" of development and promised transformative governance for Delhi.

"People have responded to issues like the dirty Yamuna, poor drinking water, broken roads, and unchecked liquor shops by voting for change," he said.

Congress Fails Again
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit managed only 4,568 votes in the New Delhi constituency. Despite its efforts, the party remained irrelevant in the capital's political landscape.

AAP's defeat marked a dramatic fall from its sweeping victories in previous elections, where it won 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020.

The vote counting, which began on Saturday morning, concluded after polling was held on February 5.

This decisive victory cements BJP’s resurgence in Delhi, reshaping the political landscape after nearly three decades.
