S. Korean President Faces Warrant Hearing: Detention Decision Pending

A vehicle carrying impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrives at the Seoul Western District Court in Seoul

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol attended a warrant hearing on Saturday to determine whether he will be detained for up to 20 days.

Television footage showed vehicles carrying the arrested president departing from the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang and arriving at the Seoul Western District Court, approximately 20 km north of the detention center.

Yoon was arrested at the presidential residence on Wednesday, marking the first time a sitting South Korean president has been taken into custody. The impeached leader had refused to testify before the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) in Gwacheon, just south of Seoul. The questioning was related to his brief imposition of martial law. If the warrant is approved, Yoon's detention period will be extended to a total of 20 days, including the initial arrest period.

The investigation is divided into two phases. During the first 10 days, Yoon will be questioned by the CIO, followed by interrogation by prosecutors for the remaining 10 days. The two sides have agreed to jointly investigate charges of insurrection against the president.

Yoon’s impeachment was passed by the National Assembly on December 14 last year and sent to the Constitutional Court, which has up to 180 days to deliberate. During this period, Yoon's presidential powers remain suspended.

Yoon has been identified by investigative agencies as a key suspect in an insurrection case. He declared martial law on the night of December 3, which was promptly revoked by the National Assembly just hours later.
