Over 2.78 Million Devotees Participate in Mahakumbh Mela on Fifth Day
Prayagraj, January 16 – The Mahakumbh Mela 2025 witnessed an overwhelming influx of devotees on its fifth day, with more than 2.78 million pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam by 4 PM, according to official data.
Out of these, over 1.78 million were pilgrims, and approximately 1 million were Kalpavasis, adding to the grandeur of the world’s largest spiritual gathering. Since the event began on January 13, over 70 million devotees have performed ritual bathing at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
By 2 PM on Friday, over 1 million Kalpavasis and pilgrims were reported to have visited the Mahakumbh Mela grounds, highlighting the devotion and significance of the event.
In a bid to ensure peace and security during the Mahakumbh Mela and other upcoming festivals, the Prayagraj district administration has imposed prohibitory orders effective until February 28.
In an official communication, the Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) announced that the orders were issued under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023 (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023).
The announcement stated:
“In the coming days, festivals and events such as the Mahakumbh 2025/Amrit Snan, Republic Day, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Sant Ravidas Jayanti, Valentine’s Day, Shab-e-Barat, and Mahashivratri will be observed, along with various competitive examinations. Due to the communal sensitivity of the district, there is a possibility of anti-social elements attempting to disrupt law and order.”
The ACP emphasized the importance of ensuring that all events and festivals proceed peacefully and that the public remains safe from potential disturbances. The urgent nature of the situation necessitated a one-sided prohibitory order, passed without prior notice to involved parties.
Key Bathing Dates Ahead
The Mahakumbh Mela, which will continue until February 26, features several important bathing dates for devotees:
January 29: Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan)
February 3: Basant Panchami (Third Shahi Snan)
February 12: Maghi Purnima
February 26: Maha Shivaratri
As preparations continue to ensure a seamless experience for visitors, the administration remains vigilant to prevent any disruptions and to provide a safe and spiritual environment for millions of devotees.
