Maha Kumbh 2025: 13.8 Million Devotees Take Holy Dip at Sangam on Makar Sankranti
By 10:30 AM on Tuesday, approximately 13.8 million devotees had taken a holy dip at the Sangam during the first Amrit Snan of Maha Kumbh 2025, officials reported.
Adding to the grandeur, a helicopter will shower flowers over all the Akharas from Prayagraj Airport between 10:30 and 11 AM, creating a mesmerizing sight for devotees. On the opening day of this monumental event, over 15 million pilgrims took part in the holy ritual at the Triveni Sangam, marking one of the world's largest gatherings.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his heartfelt congratulations to all the devotees participating in the sacred event. In a post on X, CM Yogi called Maha Kumbh a “living testament to India's eternal culture and faith.”
He remarked, “On the auspicious occasion of the great festival of folk faith, Makar Sankranti, congratulations to all devotees who earned virtue by taking the first Amrit Snan at the Triveni Sangam in Maha Kumbh 2025!” The Chief Minister also extended greetings to the people of the state, saints, and devotees, describing the festival as a tribute to the Sun God.
Sadhus from the 13 Akharas of Sanatan Dharma joined the ceremonial Amrit Snan. Swami Chidambaranand, Mahamandaleshwar of Mahanirvan Akhara, shared his thoughts on the event:
“We experience the grandeur of Indian civilisation here. Crores of people are celebrating our culture, braving the cold since 2 AM to glimpse the saints. The event unites people beyond caste barriers, showcasing the essence of Hindu culture."
The festival’s global appeal was evident as foreign devotees expressed their awe. A third-time attendee shared, “This is my third Kumbh, and I can’t put it into words. Despite the crowd, there’s a spiritual flow that remains unchanged. The police are doing a great job with crowd control, and you just learn to go with the flow.”
Another foreign visitor called Maha Kumbh a global event, saying, “This isn’t just for India; it’s an occasion for the entire world.”
The Maha Kumbh 2025 continues to inspire awe with its scale, spiritual energy, and celebration of India’s cultural heritage.
