Indonesia Reports 2024 as Hottest Year on Record
Indonesia experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), aligning with global trends of rising temperatures.
The BMKG reported an average air temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius (81.5 Fahrenheit) in 2024, which is 0.8 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 average. The data was collected from 113 monitoring stations across the nation.
Indonesia, one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters, continues to rely heavily on fossil fuels, a major contributor to global warming. Scientists have long warned that fossil fuel dependence is driving climate change and extreme weather patterns.
The year also saw Indonesia record its hottest April in over four decades, as extreme heat waves gripped parts of Asia.
The United Nations announced earlier this week that 2024 is set to be the hottest year ever recorded globally, with both China and India already reporting their hottest years in decades.
Indonesia’s record-breaking temperatures underscore the urgent need for global and local action to combat climate change and transition to sustainable energy sources.
