At Least Nine Dead in Brazil Plane Crash: Authorities

A tragic plane crash in Gramado, a prominent tourist city in southern Brazil, claimed the lives of at least nine people on Sunday morning, according to local authorities.

The small aircraft, identified as a Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop, struck the chimney of a building, collided with the second floor of a house, and eventually crashed into a furniture store, the Rio Grande do Sul state security secretariat reported in a statement. An inn located nearby was also damaged in the incident.

“All nine individuals on board have been confirmed dead by the civil defense, and there are no survivors,” said Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the Interior Police Department of the state civil police.

Authorities are still working to confirm the exact number of passengers and crew on the plane. Initial reports suggested the aircraft may have been carrying 10 people.

The crash also caused a fire, which led to at least 15 people being hospitalized, mostly for smoke inhalation, according to officials.

The ill-fated flight had taken off from Canela, another tourist hotspot in Rio Grande do Sul.

Gramado, a popular destination especially during the festive Christmas season, attracts thousands of visitors annually, making the tragic accident a somber moment for the vibrant city. Rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway.
