EU Envoy to Meet Syria's New Leaders Amid Growing International Engagement
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed on Monday that the European Union's envoy to Syria will travel to Damascus for discussions with the newly established Islamist-led leadership, following the removal of Bashar al-Assad.
This diplomatic move comes as the United States and the UK have also reached out to the new authorities, led by the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), following Assad's sudden ousting.
With the fall of Assad's regime after decades in power, regional and international powers are scrambling to establish influence in Syria.
"Our senior diplomat in Syria will be in Damascus today to initiate contacts," Kallas announced ahead of the EU foreign ministers' meeting.
While the EU, like other Western nations, remains cautious about Syria's new leadership—especially since HTS has links to Al-Qaeda and is labeled a terrorist organization—Kallas emphasized the need for engagement.
"We can't leave a vacuum," said Kallas, who took over as the EU's top diplomat this month. "We must figure out how to engage with Syria's new leadership and determine the level of our involvement."
Despite these concerns, there is cautious optimism, as the new Damascus authorities have pledged to safeguard minority rights and form a more inclusive government.
EU foreign ministers are set to discuss strategies for engagement, as some member states advocate for closer ties with Syria while others prefer a more cautious approach.
Kallas stressed that actions will be more telling than words: "It's not just about what they say, but about what they do."
"Only time will tell if these efforts move in the right direction, and we remain open to further discussions in the coming months," she added.
