Steve Smith's Century Powers Australia Close to Sri Lanka's Total on Day 2 in Galle

On the second day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in Galle, Australia showcased a strong batting performance, positioning themselves favorably in the match. Resuming from their overnight score, Sri Lanka concluded their first innings at 257 runs, with Kusal Mendis remaining unbeaten on 85.

In response, Australia faced early setbacks, losing Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, bringing the score to 37 for 2. Labuschagne's dismissal for just 4 runs has intensified scrutiny over his recent form, with discussions about his place in the team gaining momentum.

However, stand-in captain Steve Smith stabilized the innings, achieving his 36th Test century with a score of 101. This milestone places him alongside cricket legends Joe Root and Rahul Dravid. Smith was well-supported by Alex Carey, who remained unbeaten at 79. Their partnership led Australia to 251 for 3 after 64 overs, trailing Sri Lanka by just 3 runs.

Sri Lanka's bowlers, particularly offspinner Nishan Peiris, posed challenges, but Smith and Carey adeptly navigated the spin-friendly conditions. Peiris, who had a challenging first Test, showed improvement in this innings.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka's innings was bolstered by a useful final-wicket stand between Kusal Mendis and Lahiru Kumara, pushing their total past 250. Australia's bowlers, including Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann, were instrumental in restricting Sri Lanka's score.
