NC General Secretary Gagan Thapa Advocates for Constitutional Reforms to Empower Citizens

In a recent interaction titled 'Constitution Amendment: Need and Challenge' held in Lumbini province, Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa emphasized the coalition government's dedication to empowering citizens through effective implementation of the constitution. The event was organized by the NC Department of Professionals and Intellectuals in collaboration with the Democratic Lawyers' Association.

Thapa acknowledged that certain policies and regulations have posed challenges in the constitution's execution. He assured that amendments would be pursued collaboratively, ensuring consensus among political parties. He stressed the importance of comprehensive discussions on electoral systems, federalism, and provincial authorities during the amendment process. Thapa stated, "The need of the hour is to make laws in consistency with the constitution."

Highlighting NC's pivotal role in constitutional development, Thapa noted that the constitution was formulated and implemented under the leadership of the NC, following the conclusion of the peace process. He reaffirmed the party's commitment to involving all political parties in the amendment process.

Dr. Dila Sangraula, NC central member and Department coordinator, chaired the interaction. Constitutional expert Kashiraj Dahal shared that citizens have suggested reviewing the electoral system, ensuring inclusivity, and reassessing provincial structures as part of the constitutional amendment.

This initiative aligns with NC's ongoing efforts to renew active memberships ahead of its 15th General Convention, as reported in January 2025.
