Hetauda Cement Industry Faces Deepening Financial Crisis, Uncertain Future

Hetauda Cement Industry (HCI) is grappling with a severe financial crisis, leading to prolonged production halts and uncertainty about its future operations.

The factory has remained shut since October 1, 2024, initially for machine repairs. While maintenance was expected to be completed by mid-November, the process has taken longer than anticipated. However, according to administration chief and spokesperson Hareram Aryal, maintenance is not the only reason for the delay. "The economic crisis has worsened, and we are unsure when production will resume," he stated.

Despite the production shutdown, operational expenses, including employee salaries and fuel costs, continue to burden the industry, further exacerbating its financial woes. Aryal also highlighted a critical shortage of raw materials. "To operate daily, we require at least 120 trucks of coal, which is currently unavailable. Moreover, pending payments have made procurement difficult," he added.

Employees are also facing difficulties, as they have not been compensated for extra services rendered.

Established in 2033 BS at Lamsure, Hetauda, HCI began cement production in 2043 BS. However, aging equipment has significantly impacted production capacity. Technical chief Kameshwor Mandal confirmed that many machines are worn out and require extensive repairs. "Several pieces of equipment are no longer functional, and maintenance work is still ongoing," he explained.

Under normal conditions, the factory has the capacity to produce 16,000 sacks of cement daily. However, with the current crisis, its future remains uncertain.
