Israel PM gifts golden pager to Trump symbolising attack on Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a golden pager to US President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House this week, symbolizing a pivotal moment in Israel's conflict with Hezbollah last year.

Netanyahu's office stated that the gift represents "a turning point in the war" following Israel's deadly operation against the Lebanese group in September 2024, during which exploding pagers were used.

"This strategic operation highlights Israel's strength, technological innovation, and tactical ingenuity against its enemies," the statement read on Thursday.

The surprise attacks, involving explosive pagers and walkie-talkies, reportedly killed dozens of Hezbollah fighters and injured thousands, according to Lebanese authorities.

In late September, Israel launched a ground offensive into southern Lebanon, aiming to push Hezbollah forces back from the border. By late November, both sides agreed to a ceasefire, ending more than a year of hostilities marked by a relentless Israeli bombing campaign and ground invasion.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli forces continue to operate in certain parts of southern Lebanon. The initial three-month period to implement the ceasefire expired on January 26, with Israel missing the deadline for a full troop withdrawal.

Israel defended the delay, citing Lebanon's failure to meet its obligations under the agreement. The Israeli military has also conducted occasional airstrikes in the region and now faces a revised deadline of February 18 to complete its withdrawal.
