Sweden's Deadliest Mass Shooting: 10 Killed at Education Center in Örebro
Ten people were killed in a mass shooting at an adult education center in Sweden on Tuesday, with the gunman also found dead, police confirmed on Wednesday. Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the attack.
"Eleven people are dead, including the shooter," police told AFP, describing the incident in the town of Örebro as the "worst mass shooting" in Sweden’s history.
While school attacks remain relatively rare in Sweden, the country has seen a surge in gang-related shootings and bombings in recent years, resulting in dozens of deaths annually.
According to Swedish media reports, the shooter—dressed entirely in black—turned the weapon on himself at Campus Risbergska, an adult education center in Örebro.
Officials have not disclosed details about the victims' identities, ages, or whether they were students or staff. The Örebro region’s health authorities reported that six individuals suffering from gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital, but police have not commented on the severity of their injuries.
"The motive for the shooting is not yet known, but all indications suggest the perpetrator acted alone and without ideological intent," Örebro police stated.
A Rare but Growing Trend of School Attacks
Although mass shootings at schools are uncommon in Sweden, the country has witnessed several violent attacks in recent years.
In March 2022, an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed two teachers at a secondary school in Malmö.
Two months earlier, a 16-year-old was arrested after injuring a student and a teacher with a knife at a school in Kristianstad.
In October 2015, a sword-wielding attacker killed three people in a racially motivated assault at a school in Trollhättan before being shot dead by police.
Authorities continue to investigate the Örebro shooting, with further details expected in the coming days.
