Norway Hits Milestone: 96% of New Cars Registered in January Are Electric

AFP

Norway is on track to achieve its goal of selling only zero-emission vehicles as nearly 96 percent of new cars registered in January were electric. According to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (OFV), electric vehicles made up 95.8 percent of the new registrations, and when including rechargeable hybrid models, the figure rose to 96.8 percent.

A total of 9,343 new cars were sold in January, with 8,954 being all-electric. OFV director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen expressed optimism, stating, "We've never seen this before... If the rest of the year continues like this, we will very soon be close to the 2025 goal."

Norway's extensive incentives, including tax exemptions, toll breaks, free parking, and use of public transport lanes, have played a crucial role in making electric vehicles more attractive. Diesel and petrol cars accounted for just 1.5 percent and 0.4 percent of new registrations, respectively.

The Toyota bZ4X topped the list of the most sold models, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Nissan Ariya.

While Europe lags behind, with electric vehicles accounting for just 13.6 percent of new car sales in 2024, Norway’s success highlights its commitment to a greener future.
