Musk Clashes with Former EU Tech Chief Breton over Germany
Elon Musk intensified his feud with former EU digital chief Thierry Breton on Saturday, labeling him a "tyrant of Europe" as the two exchanged sharp remarks online.
Musk, a prominent ally of incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, has long been a vocal critic of the European Union's digital regulations, accusing Brussels of censorship. Earlier this week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg echoed similar concerns about the EU's regulatory measures.
The tensions escalated further after Musk openly expressed support for Germany's far-right AfD party ahead of next month's elections. His latest attack on Breton came in response to comments the EU official made regarding potential election interference.
An account shared a segment from Breton's interview with French broadcaster BFMTV/RMC, alleging he claimed that "the EU has mechanisms to nullify a potential election victory of the AfD." Musk reacted furiously, calling it "the astounding absurdity of Thierry Breton as tyrant of Europe."
Breton swiftly refuted the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
"Tyrant of Europe? Wow! But no, Elon Musk: the EU has NO mechanism to nullify any election anywhere in the EU. This is a misunderstanding. What was said in the video below relates only to the application of the DSA and its moderation obligations. Lost in translation... or another case of fake news?"
The DSA, or Digital Services Act, is the EU's landmark regulation requiring digital platforms to address illegal content and prevent harmful online activity.
In his interview on Thursday, Breton emphasized the need for Europe to "stay composed and enforce our laws when they risk being circumvented, especially if it could lead to interference." Referring to past actions, he added: "We did it in Romania, and we will obviously act, if necessary, in Germany."
The EU previously opened a DSA investigation into TikTok, following allegations that the platform was exploited by Russian actors to influence Romania’s presidential election, which was later annulled by a top Romanian court.
European regulators have also been scrutinizing Musk's platform X since December 2023 for suspected violations of the DSA, with potential penalties at stake. Musk’s close alignment with Trump has raised concerns over how the EU might address his platform’s compliance with digital regulations.
