RSP Faces Leadership Crisis After Lamichhane

Following the suspension of Rabi Lamichhane from his position as Member of Parliament on charges of cooperative fraud, a heated debate has erupted within the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) regarding his replacement as the parliamentary party leader.
Lamichhane, who simultaneously held the roles of party chairperson and parliamentary party leader, was suspended on Monday, leaving a leadership vacuum.
In the aftermath, several RSP leaders have emerged as contenders for the position of parliamentary party leader. Key figures in the running include the party’s deputy parliamentary leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, acting chairperson DP Aryal, vice-chairperson Dr. Swarnim Wagle, joint general secretary Sumana Shrestha, and MP Chanda Karki.
Amidst the competition, a faction within the party has raised concerns, alleging that Lamichhane strategically positioned Aryal for the role of acting chair while under investigation.
On Tuesday, Sumana Shrestha publicly declared her interest in becoming the parliamentary party leader.
“I will not become a leader by merely receiving a tika, but through issues and a clear agenda,” Shrestha wrote in the party’s central members’ Messenger group. “I will submit my application for the parliamentary party leader position with a vision to lead.”
Shrestha’s statement appeared to target certain office bearers indirectly, signaling her determination to challenge the status quo.
Meanwhile, some party insiders noted that Lamichhane’s leadership style focused on strategic appointments, balancing Aryal’s role in the party organization with Wagle’s presence in parliament.
Deputy leader Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has reportedly informed senior leaders of his belief that he is the natural successor for the role. However, resistance from other factions within the party has surfaced, with some arguing that a proportional representation MP like Sumana Shrestha assuming the leadership could send a controversial message.
Party sources have indicated that only a directly elected MP should hold the position of parliamentary party leader, a stance that could significantly impact the race.
Amidst this internal dispute, speculation has arisen that Aryal himself might emerge as a compromise candidate if the infighting escalates. In a further twist, some MPs have suggested Chanda Karki as an alternative to counter Shrestha’s bid.
Despite the various names being floated, the party appears to be leaning towards Dr. Swarnim Wagle as the most likely choice for parliamentary party leader.
