FNJ Slams Threats Against Journalists
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed concern over threats issued against journalists by Dharan Sub Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed concern over threats issued against journalists by Dharan Sub Metropolitan City Mayor Harka Sampang (Harkaraj Rai) through his posts on social sites.
The posts made Wednesday have been targeted against Janak Rishi Rai, Chair of the FNJ Sunsari Chapter, and Gopal Dahal, FNJ National Council member.
The FNJ, in a press statement today, reminded that under existing laws, individuals 'dissatisfied' with media content can seek legal recourse or approach the Press Council Nepal, rather than resorting to intimidation.
The umbrella body of journalists condemned the Mayor’s action, concluding such statements from a person holding public office were a direct assault on press freedom.
It has described the Mayor's conduct as reckless and disgraceful, warning that it could undermine the entire journalism sector, intimidate journalists, and violate the fundamental right to freedom of opinion and expression.
The FNJ has urged relevant authorities to uphold constitutional protections for the press and create an environment that prevents the recurrence of such incidents.
