Chhath Festival Concludes with Worship of Rising Sun in Mithila Region
Dhanusha, Nov. 8: The four-day Chhath festival concluded today with early morning rituals honoring the rising sun. Devotees gathered along rivers, ponds, and lakes across Nepal, particularly in the Mithila region’s districts of Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, and Saptari, to offer prayers and Argha (curd and water) to the Sun God.
This year, as in previous years, the festival drew large crowds to the water’s edge, where people of all backgrounds participated in the traditional celebrations. Chhath, a festival of goodwill, faith, and social harmony, is revered for encouraging non-violence, empathy, and unity among people.
The rituals of Chhath honor both the rising and setting sun, with offerings made to bring happiness, prosperity, health, and longevity.
The festival began with devotees performing Kharna on Wednesday, marking the second day of fasting and ancestral worship. The following day, on Kartik Shukla Sasthi, the main day, worshippers continued their fast and offered Argha to the setting sun, refraining even from drinking water.
It is widely believed that these rituals, if performed with devotion, can prevent skin diseases and ensure good health.
The annual celebration of Chhath in Mithila and across Nepal reflects a rich cultural heritage that promotes communal harmony, health, and spiritual well-being, further enriched by the collective faith of the people.
